Chinese Science Fiction in the Anthropocene


 A green future has become a central promise of the Chinese state and environment is playing an increasingly important role in China’s bid to promote itself as political alternative West. However, environmentalism its promotion “ecological civilization” (shengtai wenming ? ??? ) have so far proven more aligned with interests rather than environmental goals. At same time, low -orbit industrialization response climate change or resurgent fantasy p opulation control necessity from standpoint biology environmentalist discourse are entangled anxieties speculations about visions future. Using Liu Cixin’s short story The Sun China ( Zhongguo taiyang ???? , 2001) 2019 blockbuster science fiction movie Wandering Earth Liulang diqiu by Frant Gwo point departure, this paper discusses how current narratives Anthropocene reflected negotiated fiction. While both works demonstrate symbolic economic importance technology growth self-image, they also reveal that we cannot separate questions planetary historical contexts, which emerge.
